I had dragged my feet to get an owncloud self hosted instance at the time, and never really used the late CozyCloud. The birth of Nextcloud came at the right time for me, and I made the effort to start using it.

Started to install it in a test virtualbox, but given the houseworks and the unstable network status + some selfhosting issues, I early moved to a hosted solution.
Still wish to selfhost it, the day will come... With keeping in mind that if the family is a user, the family needs to keep its access to it if I'm not there anymore.

Nextcloud birth history

Just because I wish to keep this somewhere:

• 2010, Frank Karlitschek creats ownCloud, an open-source personal-cloud project.
• ownCloud Inc., a commercial company, was later formed to fund and sell enterprise services.
• Over time, tensions arose over governance, investor influence, commercial priorities and the project’s openness.
  Karlitschek left ownCloud Inc. in April 2016, questioning its direction and sustainability.
  Most of ownCloud’s core developers followed him.
• June 2016, they forked the existing ownCloud codebase and launched Nextcloud. Nextcloud promised community-oriented governance and fewer features reserved exclusively for enterprise customers.
  ownCloud Inc.’s US operation shut down shortly afterward, though the German ownCloud company and project continued.
